Opening Image1At school, children are in the middle of an activity where they share what their parents do for work. Max: “My dad is a liar.” Teacher: “A liar? I’m sure you don’t mean a liar.” Max: “Well... He wears a suit, and goes to court, and talks to the judge.” Teacher: “Oh, I see. You mean, he’s a lawyer.” But Max shrugs. He really meant his dad was a liar, plain and simple. Oh kids, always honest! And the Opening Image actually continues a bit longer. Fletcher, Max’s daddy, is late to come meet him. Max and Mom, Audrey, wait for him sitting in the front porch. Fletcher arrives and Max jumps to his feet: Dad! Fletcher does “The Claw” for Max who shrieks in pleasure. Max: “Do it to mom! Do it to mom!”. Fletcher: “Oh oh, you found the claw’s only weakness: sub zero temperatures.” In fact, things between Fletcher and his ex-wife ARE cold.
Theme Stated5Audrey tells Fletcher that Jerry, her boyfriend, is leaving to Boston. Audrey: “Max is going to miss him.” Fletcher: “I’ll be here.” And she gives him a look that says “Really?” And she walks away. And that is the theme, plain and simple: “A father must be there for his son, no matter what.”

Setup1 - 18A bit of a long set up here. Fletcher is a liar, which serves him well as a lawyer, but it has hurt his personal relationships, specially with his son Max. Audrey, looking to “protect” Max, is seriously thinking about taking Jerry’s offer to move to Boston. If that happens, Fletcher and Max will rarely get to see each other, and it will probably never be the same between them.
Catalyst20It’s time to cut Max’s birthday cake, but Max is too sad. He’s father said he’d be there for his B-day party but he’s not. He once again chose work over his son. Audrey to Max: “Come on Max, make a wish. It can be anything in the whole world.” And so he does. Max: “I wish that for only one day dad couldn’t tell a lie.” The clock shows 8:15pm... A magical music cue lingers in the air...

DebateTBDIt seems that this beat was skipped in this movie. But in reality, the debate is sprinkled all over the first act. The question is: “Does Fletcher deserve the love of his son?” We know, not yet, but soon enough he’ll have the chance to earn it.
Break Into Two21And we are with Fletcher and Miranda, just after having sex. Miranda: “That was incredible! Was it good for you?” Fletcher: “I’ve had better.” Oops. Max’s wish came true. Miranda throws Fletcher out! And with that WE are thrown into the Fun and Games of Act 2.
B Story14The B Story is introduced a little earlier in this movie, because it must introduced before Fletcher can’t lie. So, we meet Ms. Cole, and the big case that can propel Fletcher to finally becoming partner at the law firm where he works. Fletcher: “Ms. Cole, you are the victim here! The wife of a cold distant workaholic. Starved for affection! Driven into the arms of another man!” Wow, sounds a lot like his life! This B Story is brilliant in how it reflects on the A Story, and how it carries the theme of the movie. In this story we’ll see how Fletcher wrecks the relationship of another man with his kids, and that will open Fletcher's own eyes!

Fun and Games21 - 37Fletcher can’t lie at all. And for a man (and a lawyer!) that has gone through life lying every second, this is catastrophic. And how much fun it is to see Jim Carrey play Fletcher as his struggles with his dilemma. The real Fletcher comes out for the world to see, and boy he’s not pretty.
Midpoint37At the impound place, Fletcher blurts something out to Audrey that we’ve known all along but is a big revelation to him. He says: “I’m a bad father!” (This is a false defeat, look for the false victory in the ALL IS LOST MOMENT). So Audrey tells Fletcher that their leaving to Boston, but Fletcher manages to convince her. One last chance. See you at 6pm.

Bad Guys Close In37 - 65Fletcher keeps going about his problem in the wrong way. Instead of just embracing the thruth, all he’s interested in is being able to lie again. He even forces Max to unwish his wish over a new cake! Fletcher: “Max, everyone lies.” Max: “But you’re the only one that makes me feel bad.” Heartbreaking. Without being able to lie, things are not well for Fletcher professionally either. When he confesses his curse (or someone hears about it) things don’t turn out so well. For example, Fletcher’s new honesty makes Greta, his loyal secretary, quit when he confesses he lied about a raise she had asked for a few months before. And what is worse, his big case is falling to pieces. That is until...
All Is Lost65...Due to a technicality, the fact that Ms. Cole lied about her age on her driver’s license so she could get married as a minor, Fletcher wins the case, by yes, telling the truth! But... This is a false victory. As it turns out, Fletcher has created a monster, his client now wants sole custody of the kids! Fletcher: “But you said he was a good father.” Ms. Cole: “So?”.

Dark Night of the Soul66 - 68Fletcher sees how on their way out of the courthouse the kids cling to their father while the bitchy Ms. Cole pulls them away. The father is left on his knees, wondering if he’ll lose his kids forever. And Fletcher feels horrible. He just wrecked this other guy’s relationship with his kids. He tries to fix things by talking to the judge. But he loses it and starts screaming, so he ends up in jail. So he misses his 6pm appointment with Audrey (and Max.)

Break into Three69Fletcher gets to make his phone call from jail. He calls his wife Audrey, Fletcher: “Audrey. I’m a changed man!” But... She’s had it. She tells Fletcher he’s taking Max somewhere where he can’t do this to him anymore. They are leaving to Boston.
Finale70 - 80Greta bails Fletcher out of jail. Fletcher realizes he loves his son more than anything in the world so he runs to the airport, screaming “I love my son! I love my son!” He manages to stop the plane from taking off by stealing a truck and getting in front of it. He tells his son, that he loves him and he’ll never hurt him again, and he knows it’s the truth because he CAN’T lie! But wait, it’s 8:45, the curse is over, he’s been able to lie for the last half an hour. But that’s the thing, he doesn’t WANT to lie anymore. He’s a changed man. Max got his father back, he’s not moving to Boston.

Final Image80One year later. Max’s birthday again. “Max, make a wish!” Fletcher panics. Audrey: “Come on, what are the chances of something like that happening again...” So Max blows the candles and it goes dark, and when he turns the lights back on, mommy and daddy are kissing! Fletcher: “Max! Did you wish for mom and dad to get back together?” Max: “No! I wished for rollerblades.” Audrey to Fletcher: “Do you want to cut the cake?... Dad.” Fletcher: “I’d love to, but I got this terrible pain in my arm...” THE CLAW is back! But as opposed to the Opening Image, this time the claw is back for both Max AND Audrey. The family is back together!
